About

Mixed spice is English in origin and is also known as a baking spice and pudding spice and used in many festive recipes.
Mixed spice is very similar to the Dutch spice mix called koekkruiden or speculaaskruiden, the American Pumpkin pie spice mix and it is also similar to French quatre épices’’. Mixed spice is used in baked/steamed puddings, mincemeat pies, fruit cakes, shortbreads, pastries, and biscuits.

Uses & Ideas

Add mixed spice to an equal amount of castor sugar, spoon over halved plums, peaches or figs and glaze under a grill - serve with vanilla bean ice-cream or cream.

Add mixed spice to frangipane filled sweet tarts studded with apricots and flaked almonds.

Top roasted pumpkin or sweet potato with mixed spice and slow roast in the oven.

Mix 60g cocoa, 200g caster sugar and 60ml vegetable oil together. Add 2 eggs one at a time, whisking until fully combined. Next combine 180g plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 oranges zested, 2 tsp mixed spice, 1 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of salt in a separate bowl. Then add to the cocoa mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Heat oven to 190C. Place 50g icing sugar on a flat plate. Roll dough into 20g balls then roll in the icing sugar.
